CHAPTER THIRTY

Mike fell asleep in his driveway when he got home from work—not for the first time. One of his neighbors happened to see him while walking the dog and woke him up, fearing he’d had a heart attack. Mike worried that this was becoming a regular thing. It amazed him that he could get so tired that he could fall asleep almost instantly, with the sun shining directly on his face.

After Mike had slept for a while, he had a normal day, including a call with his parents. His dad was interested in hearing some police stories, and his mom was worried about him. Typical Irish mom stuff.

Mike got to work and was assigned to Squad 54 with Sherry Pabinski. PO Pabinski recognized him from his first day of field training. She gave him a friendly smile when he approached her, showing a mouth full of braces that made her look like a teenager.

Pabinski was blonde, with a thin build, cute with a slight edge of streetwise. She was in her midtwenties, and from a police family. Her dad was a copper with an excellent reputation as a homicide detective, and she also had some uncles on the job. She was the first female from the family to work as a cop.

Pabinski had started with the PD when she was seventeen, working as a Police Aide. Police Aides did clerical duties and went to school during work time to get their associate degrees in Police Science. They wore uniforms and had to do PT. They did not carry guns or any type of weapon while on duty, and they were not sworn law enforcement officers.

When they turned twenty-one, the state-mandated minimum age to be a cop in Wisconsin, they got a spot in the next class in the Police Academy, where they had to go through the same six months of training that everyone else did. The biggest advantage of being a Police Aide first was that you could retire with a full pension after working for twenty-five years. So, a Police Aide could retire at age forty-two, a pretty sweet deal. The downside was that former Police Aides sometimes had reputations as know-it-alls.

After roll call, Sherry invited Mike to the smoke and joke going on in the garage. Most officers didn’t pay too much attention to him, but some talked to him and made him feel welcome. Pabinski was down to earth and didn’t try to be a hardass, unlike some other coppers.

PO Pabinski started the night out with a visit to a gas station to get a bottle of Mountain Dew and a bag of Doritos and to replenish her cigarette supply. Mike was amazed that she could balance all these things, drive a squad car, and use the mic at the same time.

After taking some “shots fired” calls that didn’t amount to anything, they received a call to “Meet the woman who was just robbed in an alley off Wright and Martin Luther King Drive.”

Pabinski shouted, “This is bullshit! She’s a hooker that didn’t get paid.
